Diefenbunker--Carp, Ontario (August 2008)

01-Exterior

This unassuming building is the entrance to the Diefenbunker, which would have
been the temporary home of the Canadian government in case of nuclear war.
It's now a fascinating Cold War museum.

Before it was decommissioned and became a museum, the official name of this
facility was Canadian Forces Station Carp. (Carp is a small town in an agricultural
area about 20 miles southwest of Ottawa.) CFS Carp got its nickname because
John Diefenbaker was the prime minister who ordered the construction of the
bomb-hardened command centers across Canada. Although there were other
Diefenbunkers, this was the most important one, because it would have housed
the PM and other senior government officials.
